Overview:
Valluvar Kottam, located in Chennai, is a stunning monument dedicated to the legendary Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar. Built in the 1970s, this architectural masterpiece honors his contributions to Tamil literature, particularly the Thirukkural, a revered collection of 1330 verses. The monument, designed like a temple chariot, features a life-size statue of Thiruvalluvar and showcases his work etched on granite columns. It also hosts various exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year.
Architecture:
The temple-like structure is a fine example of Tamilian architecture, designed by architect V. Ganapati Sthapati. The centerpiece is a 39-meter-high chariot with a life-size statue of Thiruvalluvar. The 1330 verses of Thirukkural are carved on granite columns, and the building itself stands without the support of any pillars. The adjoining auditorium can hold 4,000 people.
History:
Built in 1975-76 by M. Karunanidhi, Valluvar Kottam commemorates the timeless literary contributions of Thiruvalluvar, the author of the Thirukkural, which remains a guide for righteous living and morality.
