Overview of Vizhinjam Lighthouse

Set atop the palm-covered Kurumkal Hill, Vizhinjam Lighthouse offers a stunning view of the Arabian Sea and Kovalam Beach in Kerala. Built in 1972, this towering structure is the tallest lighthouse in Kovalam, reaching a height of 36 meters. Its distinct red and white candy-stripe pattern makes it a striking landmark, while the 360-degree aerial view from the top is an absolute visual treat.

The lighthouse is located just about 2 kilometers from the famous Rock Cut Cave, and its location near the Kovalam Beach has made it synonymous with the area, earning the nickname Kovalam Lighthouse. This lighthouse provides some of the most breathtaking views of the coastline and is a must-visit spot for photography enthusiasts.

What to Expect at Vizhinjam Lighthouse

The Vizhinjam Lighthouse offers an exciting experience for visitors with its spiral staircase comprising 144 steps, leading you to an observation deck at the top. For those who find it difficult to climb the stairs, an elevator is available, though it does not reach the very top. The lighthouse is equipped with metal halide lamps and a direct-drive mechanism.

At the top, you can marvel at the panoramic views of the surrounding Kovalam coastline, lush palm trees, the deep-blue Arabian Sea, and even the busy Vizhinjam harbor. You can also spot the Beemapally Mosque in the distance and watch speedboats cruising across the waters. An observation pedestal at the top allows visitors to take in the entire 360° view of the surroundings.

Must-Know Before You Visit
